Boho Crochet Motif Granny Square Pattern + Blanket
There is something special about a simple granny square, the options are endless for how many different things you can create, but sometimes you might want a more detailed crochet square! Crochet Motifs can be used to make blankets, afghans, pillows and bags! I designed this boho puff stitch crochet motif granny square to put a twist on a classic granny. I wanted to create a modern crochet granny square that I could use many different ways, but especially for a motif crochet blanket!

What is a Motif in Crochet?
A crochet motif is made up of small crochet shapes joined together to make something larger, like a blanket, pillow, cardigan and bags. The most well known and popular crochet motif is a granny square but hexagons and other crochet shapes can be found too! Some motif patterns are made with simple stitches, while others can be more complex.
How Do You Crochet a Fancy Granny Square Motif?
Simple granny squares are a great beginner crochet project, but sometimes they can be a bit boring. To crochet a Fancy Granny Square Motif it can be simple with a combination of a few stitches like this modern crochet motif granny square! For this boho crochet granny square I used a puff stitch and a shell stitch to give pattern motif just the right amount of fancy. The center shell feature makes for a great focal point on this boho crochet granny square and the puff stitch frames it nicely!
How Many Granny Squares to Crochet a Blanket?
The number of squares to crochet a granny square blanket depends on two things, 1. How big are the motif squares and 2. How big do you want to make the motif blanket? These Modern Crochet Granny Squares are 7 inches by 7 inches. So to give a simple example is if you wanted to make a 42 inch by 56 inch blanket you would divide by 7 inches for each side and see you will need 6 x 8 squares. Then multiply that to know that you will need 48 squares to complete that blanket.

- Size 5.50 mm crochet hook
- #4 Worsted Wt. Yarn
Each Sq uses 0.9 oz or 46 yards + seaming
1000 (2200, 3000) yards total

Gauge
- 14 sts x 14 rows using sc is 4 by 4 inches or one square is 7 by 7 inches.
Stitch Descriptions and Abbreviations
- Chain Stitch – ch
- Stitch(es) – st(s)
- Slip Stitch – sl st
- Single Crochet – sc
- Puff Stitch – ps – Yarn over, insert hook into stitch or space and pull up a loop for a total of 4 times in same stitch or space, yarn over, pull through all loops on hook.
Pattern Notes
- Skill Level: Easy
- Sizes: One Square is 7 by 7 inches, blankets are 28 by 35 (42 by 49, 49 by 56) inches
- * Designates a repeat.
- Make 20 (42, 56) squares and lay out 4 by 5 (6 by 7, 7 by 8)
- No turns at the end of each Round.
Modern Crochet Granny Square Pattern
Round 1 – Ch 4, *1 dc in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, repeat from * 6 more times, sl st to 3rd ch of starting ch-4 (counts as 1st dc)
[8 dc, ch-1 sps]
Round 2 – Ch 1, sc in 1st ch-sp, *7 dc in next ch-1 sp, sc in next ch-1 sp, repeat from * 2 more times, 7 dc in next ch-1 sp, sl st to st sc st.
[(4) 7-dc shells, 4 sc]
Round 3 – Ch 4, (dc, ch 3, dc, ch 1, dc) same st as join, *ch 5, skip 7-dc, (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 3, dc, ch 1, dc) in next sc, repeat from * 2 more times, ch 2, dc (counts as 3 chs) into 3rd ch of ch-4.
[16 dc, 4 ch-5 sps, 4 ch-3 sps. 8 ch-1 sps]
Round 4 – Ch 2, 2 hdc around joining dc *2 hdc in next ch-1 sp, (2 hdc, ch 3, 2 hdc) in ch-3 corner, 2 hdc in next ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in ch-5 sp, work 1 hdc over ch-5 and into center dc of 7dc cluster, 2 hdc in ch-5 sp, repeat from * 2 more times, 2 hdc in next ch-1 sp, (2 hdc, ch 3, 2 hdc) in ch-3 corner, 2 hdc in next ch-1 sp, 2 hdc in ch-2 sp, work 1 hdc over ch-5 and into center dc of 7dc cluster, sl st to ch 2,

Round 5 – Ch 2, starting in the next hdc not the join st *[1 hdc, ch 1, sk 1] to 1 st before corner, 1 hdc in last st before corner, (2 hdc, ch 3, 2 hdc) in ch-3 corner, sk first hdc; repeat from * around, [1 hdc, ch 1, sk 1] to beginning of round, sl st to first hdc.
[7 total ch 1 sps each side to place ps]
Round 6 – Sl st to ch-1, ch 2, (PS, ch 1, skip 1) to ch-3 space, *(2 hdc, ch 3, 2 hdc) in ch-3 corner, (ch 1, sk 1, PS) to ch-3 corner, ch 1, repeat from * around, (ch 1, sk 1, PS) to beginning of round, ch 1, sl st to ch-2.
[19 total sts each side using ps, ch sps and hdc]
Round 7 – Ch 2, *(1 hdc, ch 1, sk 1) to last st on side, 1 hdc in last st, (2 hdc, ch 3, 2 hdc) in ch-3 corner, sk first hdc on next side, repeat from * around, work (1 hdc, ch 1, sk 1) to beginning of round, sl st to ch-2.
[23 total hdc sts and ch 1 sps each side]
Round 8 – Ch 1, 2 sc in each ch-1 sp on each side skipping hdc between ch-1 sps, 1 sc in each hdc immediately before and after corners, 5 sc in each ch-3 corner space, sl st to beg ch 1. Finish off and seam together your squares.
