An Irish Coffee is the most delightful little treat. Adding sugar, coffee, cream, and Irish whiskey can just never be wrong. I’m going to give you my tips and tricks to make sure this recipe turns out perfect.

What is Irish Coffee?

Irish coffee is a co*cktail that combines coffee, sugar, and whiskey and is topped with whipped cream, through which you drink the coffee mixture. It’s roots come from coffee houses in Vienna in the mid-19th century.

While the roots of this recipe don’t really seem to be Irish at all, rather from other parts of Europe, this delightful drink is easy to make at home and the perfect St. Patrick’s Day co*cktail.

Irish Coffee Ingredients

  • Coffee: The base of this drink is coffee, though the type varies from recipe to recipe. Some recipes call for espresso diluted in water. I find this recipe delightful made with my typical home brew.
  • Brown Sugar: Most recipes simply call for sugar. I find that brown sugar adds another layer of flavor that is perfect here.
  • Irish Whiskey: The quintessential ingredient here, is whiskey. While I think using Irish Whiskey makes it more of an Irish co*cktail, you should use what you like.
  • Cream: In this recipe we are making some homemade whipped cream. Certainly if you are in a pinch, you can use the spray cream from the can.

How to Make Irish Coffee

This is a brief overview of how to make this fantastic St. Patrick’s Day co*cktail. For the full recipe with all of the measurements, please see the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  1. Brew the coffee. Nothing special here, just make your coffee as you always do.
  2. Make whipped cream. While the coffee is brewing whip up some whipped cream.
  3. Stir in sugar and whiskey. Add 1 tablespoon of brown sugar and 1 ounces of whiskey to each 8 ounce glass of coffee.
  4. Top with whipped cream. One of the best parts of drinking this co*cktail is drinking it through the cream on top. While you can stir it in, I love it just floating on top.

How to Make Whipped Cream

Whipped cream is so easy to make! It is just a few simple steps. You could even kick this recipe up a notch and, as mentioned below, make Chocolate Whipped Cream to go on top.

  1. Freeze a metal bowl and whisk (the whisk attachment for a stand mixer or the beaters for a handheld mixer) for 15 minutes. This is an essential step, and they both must be metal.
  2. In the cold metal bowl, combine 1 tablespoon sugar and 1 cup heavy whipping cream.
  3. Beat the two together with the cold metal whisk until stiff peaks form.

Chocolate Whipped Cream

Chocolate Whipped Cream is only three ingredients! Easy to make and is the perfect addition to any dessert! You can even use it as frosting.

Variations

This recipe is great as is, but you know me. I love to mix things up a little. Here are some great variations on this fun drink!

Baileys Irish Cream Coffee: Swap out your Irish Whiskey for some Baileys and cut both your brown sugar and your whipped cream in half. You can add more of both as you like, but start off with half.

Chocolate Irish Coffee: Instead of regular whipped cream, use my chocolate whipped cream to top this!

Salted Caramel Irish Coffee: Leave out the sugar and the cream, and instead use ice cream, caramel sauce, and a little kosher salt.

Irish Coffee Shots: Instead of an entire cup of coffee for sipping, these are shots of espresso with whiskey and cream!

    Hi Lisa,
Love your recipes — I find them easy to follow and results are usually terrific. On the Irish Coffee, though — 1 TBLS of sugar in each glass — not a TSP? !

How do you make Jamie Oliver's Irish coffee? ›

Irish Coffee recipe

Pour away the water. Add the sugar and coffee and stir until completely dissolved. Add the whisky to the coffee and stir. From a jug with a good spout and over the back of a teaspoon, pour your slightly whipped cream over the surface of the coffee until you hit the rim of the glass.

What kind of whiskey do you use for Irish coffee? ›

Use a whiskey you'd drink neat. Old standbys like Jameson and Bushmills work well, but there's a new emerging class of good Irish whiskies to consider, like Slane and Teeling. The same goes for the whipped cream on top.

What is the difference between Baileys coffee and Irish coffee? ›

Baileys coffee is a spin on Irish coffee using Baileys Irish Cream instead of cream and sugar. Irish coffee is a classic co*cktail you probably already know: warm coffee with a shot of Irish whiskey, topped with whipped cream. The modern version was invented in the 1950's in Ireland.

Why won't cream float on Irish coffee? ›

Sugar. Whether you take sugar in your coffee or not (I don't, but coffee snobs can do one as far as I'm concerned), it is essential here, and not just for flavour. Without it, your cream won't float properly, so please, don't be tempted to cut back.

The official, original Irish coffee recipe from Sheridan is a five step process with only four ingredients: hot coffee, sugar, cream, and whiskey. The first step is to preheat your glass with hot water.

Jameson, Bushmills, Slaine, Proper No. 12, and really any other entry-level Irish whiskey are all going to be excellent.

Should I put Baileys or Kahlua in coffee? ›

Kahlua is a dark liquid without the creaminess of Baileys. They both taste of coffee but kahlua is much stonger. If you want one to add to coffee I'd suggest Kahlua, but if you want one to sip alongside your coffee I'd suggest Baileys.

What's better Kahlua or Baileys? ›

However, which one should you choose from the two of them depends on what you typically like to eat/drink. If you're looking for something sweet with chocolate notes, Baileys is your best bet. On the other hand, if you're looking for something creamy with coffee notes, Kahlua is your best bet!

Which is stronger Baileys or Kahlua? ›

The Kahlua alcohol percentage is around 20%—slightly higher than Baileys alcohol content which is typically 17%. Kahlua and Baileys are versatile liqueurs that make delicious co*cktails when combined with other ingredients.

How do you get cream to stay on top of Irish coffee? ›

If using lightly whipped cream, pour it slowly over a warm spoon onto the coffee, being careful not to break the coffee's surface. This takes some practice. A more foolproof way to not break the surface is to whip the cream a bit more and dollop it gently on top. Drink while hot!

Why is my Irish coffee curdling? ›

When a coffee that is maybe a little higher in lactic acid is mixed with older milk (milk continues to build more and more lactic acid as it ages), then curdling can occur. The milk may not be spoiled enough to cause an off odor or flavor, but just enough acid and heat (in addition to its own) can cause curdling.

How do you add Baileys to coffee without curdling? ›

To prevent Baileys from curdling pour Baileys into the cup first, then slowly add coffee. Using coffee that's not too hot can also help.

What is the best coffee to use for Irish coffee? ›

A medium roast is the way to go

Hot coffee, sugar, Irish whiskey, and whipped cream are the ingredients that make an Irish coffee. In perfect harmony, sweet sugar offsets the bitterness of the coffee, while the fiery spirit is instead tamed by a dollop of rich cream, creating satisfaction in every sip.

Which alcohol goes in Irish coffee? ›

Pour piping hot coffee into warmed glass until it is about 3/4 full. Add the brown sugar and stir until completely dissolved. Blend in Irish whiskey. Top with a collar of the whipped heavy cream by pouring gently over back of spoon.

Do you stir Irish coffee before drinking? ›

Rule number one is to never stir an Irish coffee. You should be drinking it with the cream layer still distinctively separated so every mouthful is firstly of sweet cream, followed by a boozy, toffee coffee layer.
