This topic is one which is near and dear to me! I really love to make and use crochet dishcloth patterns and crochet washcloths patterns for a number of reasons. When I first heard of crocheted dishcloth patterns, I thought they sounded really strange, and “why bother”? Crochet dishcloth patterns are a great first crochet project as they are essentially just a small square. Use basic stitches or intermediate stitches to make different designs to match your skill level.

Advantages of Using Crocheted Dishcloth Patterns

There are several benefits to using crocheted cotton dishcloths instead of standard dishcloths made from other materials. Here are some benefits of using crocheted cotton dishcloths:

  1. Absorption: Crochet cotton is known for being able to take in a lot of water. It works well to soak up water and other liquids, making it perfect for dishwashing and other kitchen cleaning chores.
  2. Durable: Crochet cotton is a strong cloth that can be used and washed over and over again. It is less likely to break or wear out quickly, which makes it a good choice for dishcloths that need to last a long time.
  3. Scrubbing Power: The rough surface of crocheted cotton dishcloths makes them very good at cleaning. It can help get rid of stubborn food particles and stains on plates, pots, and pans without scratching the surfaces.
  4. Eco-friendly: Using crocheted cotton dishcloths instead of throwaway ones is a good choice for the environment. They can be used more than once, which cuts down on trash and the need for one-time-use items. Also, if you use pure cotton, it is biodegradable, and when you do eventually throw out your cloth, it will decompose naturally.

Overall, cotton crocheted dishcloths are useful, last a long time, and have a bit of personal charm. They are a good way to keep a clean and eco-friendly kitchen, and they last for ages.

Skill Level for Crochet Dishcloth Patterns

The first below crochet dishcloth patterns or a crochet washcloth pattern is for beginner crocheters. Crocheted dishcloth patterns are fantastic for crocheters just starting out. You won't need a lot of yarn, and this will give you some experience before you tackle a more involved crochet project.

Materials for Crocheting Dishcloth Patterns

  • Yarn of your choice.
  • Crochet hook appropriate for your yarn.
  • Scissors.
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends.

What is the Best Yarn for Crochet Dishcloths

I would highly recommend a cotton yarn, or at least a cotton blend, as you need this to be absorbent. It also needs to be at least double knit (#3 - 4) weight to work up to the right size and again for absorbency. Use your favorite cotton yarns.

You can, of course, choose any color you fancy, but I generally make my kitchen dishcloths white so that they can be bleached when necessary. You can make them up to match your décor if you so wish!

What Crochet Stitch is Best for Dishcloths

The best crochet stitches are ones with texture such as the lemon peel stitch, waffle stitch, linen stitch, or moss stitch. You can also use a combination of single crochet and half double crochet if you are a beginner. See my types of crochet stitch tutorial.

What is the Standard Size of a Crochet Dishcloth

You can make your crochet dishcloths in any size. Make different sizes for different purposes. A good size is approximately 6” square. (15cm)

The crochet gauge of this dishcloth or crochet washcloth pattern is not important. Chain any even number of times to adjust the size of this washcloth.

2. How to Crochet a Dishcloth with Berry Stitch

This crocheted dishcloth pattern is slightly more complicated but still simple and makes a more textured washcloth. This crochet stitch creates a raised square texture in the finished project. You work a single crochet stitch in between each stitch and row to create an alternating pattern.

You can adjust the size by using any even number of chains as the foundation chain.

Berry crochetstitch- place your hook into the space, yo, pull through, yo, and pull through 1 loop on the hook. Then, yo, place your hook into the same space again, yo, pull through, yo, and pull through all 4 loops on the hook.

  1. Row 1: Chain 26 (or even number of stitches). Sc in the second chain from the hook, bc, then* sc in next stitch, bc in next*, repeat * until the chain is finished. Finish with a sc. 1 chain turn (34 stitches)
  2. Row 2: Sc into each stitch until the row is finished, chain 1, turn (34 stitches).
  3. Row 3: Continue rows 1 and 2 until you have 26 rows. Or until your cloth is the length you desire.
  4. Tie off the yarn and cut. Weave in the ends using a tapestry needle.

This looks good done in another color. (As long as you aren’t planning to bleach your cloth!)

  2. Make three single crochets in each corner.
  3. Slip stitch to the first stitch to finish. Fasten off and weave ends.

How to Add a Loop to a Crochet Dishcloth

Adding a loop to your dishcloth or washcloth makes it easy to hang to dry quickly.

  1. Crochet 16 chain stitches (or double your desired loop length)
  2. Join to the end of the first stitch with a slip stitch. This will form a loop.
  3. Single crochet into the chain stitches. Slip stitch into the beginning.
  4. Fasten off at the end.

What to Use Crochet Dishcloths For

These can be used in your kitchen as washing up cloths or wiping down surfaces cloths. They make equally good washcloths in the bathroom for washing your body in the bath or the shower.

They are wonderful as small gifts, quick and easy to make, and you can personalize them to suit the recipient by using their favorite colors. I have seen lovely gift packs at markets which are simply a pretty crochet washcloth wrapped around a luxury soap and wrapped up decoratively with cellophane and ribbon.

A larger dishcloth can be used as a dish towel and makes a great gift.

Different Stitches for Crochet Dishcloths

I love to practice any new crochet stitch I am trying out by making a washcloth. You can make square dishcloths from any stitch at all, and it will not really matter if you make a mistake or two while you are learning the stitch! I even have some very pretty lacy washcloths, which are not nearly as practical, but do look attractive and are still useful!
