Top Tips for Your Heart Quilt Project

  • If you’re a beginner, start simple. Choose a pattern with lots of squares and rectangles, try to avoid patterns with curved lines. Also, opt for making a small quilt. If you love making your first quilt, then you can choose a bigger, more complex quilt next time.
  • If you are following a pattern, read all the instructions before you start to make sure you don’t cut anything that shouldn’t be cut!

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most famous quilt pattern?

The Log Cabin quilt pattern is one of the oldest and most versatile patterns. It is loved due to its simplicity and ease to sew, made up of various sizes of rectangles. But there are tons of traditional blocks and tons of variations of all of them – like my hexagon take on the log cabin block.

How do you quilt a heart block?

Once you have pieced your heart blocks and your quilt is all together there are lots of choices for how to quilt it.

If you are doing free motion quilting you might consider only quilting the background around the heart to make it pop or stitching in the ditch to emphasise the heart shape.

For a more modern take you could quilt a whole heart quilt using straight line matchstick quilting all over.

How do you make a fabric stuffed heart?

To make a fabric stuffed heart, trace around a template and cut out two matching pieces of fabric.

Sew them together, wrong side to wrong side, leaving a 1/4 inch seam, and a small gap. Turn the heart inside out, and add stuffing, then use a ladder stitch to finish the heart. I made some fleece heart cushions this way with my kids.

I hope you have found a great pattern for your next fun project! Let me know if you end up using one of these patterns. It makes my day when I see my patterns or those I share take on a new life.
